Investment casting is an important process for producing precision parts. The various steps of investment casting, including making wax patterns, dewaxing, pouring, cooling and cleaning, help readers understand this complex and delicate process.

Investment casting is an important process for producing precision parts, especially for manufacturing metal parts with complex shapes and high precision requirements. Compared with other casting methods, investment casting can produce products with smooth surfaces and precise dimensions, and is widely used in aerospace, automobile manufacturing, medical equipment and other fields. This article will analyze the process flow of investment casting in detail.

1. Making wax patterns: accurately replicating the shape of parts
The first step in investment casting is to make wax patterns. First, according to the design drawings of the parts, a wax pattern is carved out using special equipment or by hand. The shape and size of the wax pattern must be exactly the same as the final product, so extremely precise operation is required. The material of the wax pattern is usually thermoplastics, such as polyethylene wax or polypropylene wax, which have good plasticity and fluidity, making it easy to process into the desired shape.

2. Core making and assembly: ensuring the internal structure
For parts with complex internal structures, core materials need to be made. The core material is usually made of refractory materials, such as quartz sand, clay, etc. The shape and position of the core material determine the channels and chambers inside the part. After the core material is made, it is placed inside the wax mold and fixed by adhesive. This forms a complete casting structure, including both the external shape and the internal structure.

3. Coating and hardening: forming a refractory shell
The next step is to coat the mold multiple times to form one or more layers of refractory shell. Commonly used coating materials include silica sol, ceramic powder, refractory coating, etc. After each coating, the mold needs to be dried so that the coating layer hardens and firmly adheres to the surface of the wax mold. As the number of coatings increases, the shell layer gradually becomes thicker, and finally a solid refractory mold is formed. This process not only protects the wax mold from high temperatures, but also ensures the stability and strength of the mold.

4. Dewaxing: removing the internal wax mold
When the mold is completely hardened, the internal wax mold needs to be removed by heating. This process is called dewaxing and is usually carried out in a dedicated dewaxing furnace. The dewaxing furnace uses steam or inert gas as the heating medium, and the temperature gradually increases, causing the wax pattern to slowly melt and flow out of the mold. During the dewaxing process, the temperature and time need to be strictly controlled to ensure that the wax pattern is completely removed without damaging the mold. In addition, attention should be paid to ventilation and smoke exhaust to prevent harmful gases from causing harm to the human body.

5. Pouring and cooling: filling with molten metal
After dewaxing, the mold enters the pouring stage. First, the mold is preheated to a certain temperature, and then the molten metal is poured into the mold. The temperature and pouring speed of the molten metal need to be strictly controlled to ensure that the molten metal can evenly fill the entire mold while avoiding defects such as pores and shrinkage. After pouring, the mold needs to be cooled naturally to allow the molten metal to solidify and form. During the cooling process, the gas inside the mold may form pores, so a reasonable exhaust system needs to be designed to exhaust the gas in time.

6. Cleaning and post-processing: Obtaining finished parts
The last step is to clean and post-process the casting. First, remove the mold shell and residual core material, usually using high-pressure water jets or mechanical grinding. Then, the surface of the casting is cleaned to remove impurities such as oxide scale and sand. For castings that need further processing, machining, heat treatment and other processes are required to meet the performance requirements of the final product. Through these steps, a precision casting completes the entire process from design to production.

As a high-precision and high-efficiency casting process, investment casting plays an important role in modern manufacturing. By strictly controlling each process link, metal parts with complex shapes and high precision requirements can be produced to meet the needs of various industrial fields. With the development of technology, the investment casting process is also constantly improving and perfecting, and it is expected to be applied in more fields in the future.
