What is Drive Shaft ?

 

A drive shaft, driveshaft, driving shaft, tailshaft , propeller shaft (prop shaft), or Cardan shaft (after Girolamo Cardano) is a component for transmitting mechanical power, torque, and rotation, usually used to connect other components of a drivetrain that cannot be connected directly because of distance or the need to allow for relative movement between them.

As torque carriers, drive shafts are subject to torsion and shear stress, equivalent to the difference between the input torque and the load. They must therefore be strong enough to bear the stress, while avoiding too much additional weight as that would in turn increase their inertia.

Components of Drive Shaft

 

Universal joints (u-joints)

These joints connect the drive shaft to the differential and allow for the rotation of the drive shaft while accommodating changes in angle and alignment. U-joints consist of a cross-shaped bearing connected to the yokes.

Drive shaft boots

The drive shaft boots are rubber covers that protect the U-joints from dirt, water, and debris. They also help to keep the grease inside the U-joints, which lubricates them and helps to prevent wear.

Slip yoke

Bearings
The bearings allow the wheel and hub to spin freely. Usually there is an inner bearing and outer bearing per hub. The bearings get packed with grease for maximum lubrication.

1.Place new lubricated hub on the spindle
2.Reinstall all of the components
3.Tighten the spindle nut (30 to 40 ft. - lbs.), while turning the hub to ensure that the bearings are seated accordingly (do not move the hub after this step has been completed)
4.Loosen the spindle nut completely, until the nut can be naturally turned with your fingers
5.Tighten the spindle nut by hand, without moving the hub
6.Install the cotter pin - if it cannot be assembled, back the spindle nut up to the next available slot, then insert the cotter pin
7.Bend the legs of the cotter pin over the top of the spindle, so that the spindle nut will not back off (the spindle nut should freely move with your fingers, being held in place by the cotter pin, while the hub should not have noticeable movement when pulled back & forth)

5 Signs of a Failing Drive Shaft

 

A bad driveshaft can sometimes be very difficult to diagnose if it's in the early stages of failing, but imminent drive shaft failure should be more obvious. Here are some symptoms to keep an eye and ear out for when diagnosing drive shaft problems:

 

Vibrations
Can you feel a slight shake through the steering wheel or is it more of a seat-of-your-pants thing, where the shaking is making itself felt via the driver's seat? Vibrations are often caused by a wheel that's thrown a balance but can also be a sign of a drive shaft problem.

How do Wheel Hubs Work?
